Taking a holistic approach to your health and healing means looking beyond just the physical body and considering your mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing because it’s all interconnected. Your thoughts, beliefs, emotions, and past experiences all have a direct affect on your physical body.

 

How often do you experience mysterious aches and pains without ever taking the time to go deeper and work out exactly what is causing them? Pain is a signal, an attempt to get your attention. If we do not address the cause for the pain, our body will store and file it away for another time.

 

Unresolved emotions, past trauma, hidden fears, resistance, rigid beliefs, an inflexible attitude and/or negative mental thoughts and patterns leave physiological imprints in our bodies, especially when we experience trauma or stressful situations that cause the body to fight, flee or freeze in order to cope. At A Balance Within, we call this “issues in your tissues.”

 

We have heard and most likely used certain phrases in reference to this like shouldering too many responsibilities, for example, can be a “pain in the neck.” If you suffer from neck and shoulder tension, it could be that you are overly burdened, which often leads to neck and shoulder tightness.

 

When we experience certain emotions such as sadness, anger, resentment, grief or loneliness, we feel them deeply. Because it hurts, we sometimes suppress those parts of ourselves to keep the pain from intensifying or spreading. This, ultimately, is a disservice and causes more imbalances and harm than good.

 

Imbalances often occur when we resist an emotion and its natural path through the body. This unprocessed emotional energy and resistance can cause an emotion to get stuck or locked into the body, getting stored in our organs, muscles and tissues. This can eventually lead to inflammation, blocked circulation, pain, and chronic health problems.

 

Physical issues derived from our emotions are particularly interesting. We hold much of the ’emotional baggage’ in the same places in our body. People all over the world have studied this and have come up with very similar results. People are generally reluctant to deal with emotional issues, but quick to take action when it comes to physical pain or illness. Therefore, it is often a physical issue that brings someone to the process of healing the root cause.

Trapped emotions and other “issues in the tissues” can get in our way and limit us if we allow them to. They can sabotage our efforts to create the life we want and can also cause physical pain and dis-ease along the way. Releasing the emotional energy that’s stuck in our bodies can shift our lives in a positive way.
