Holistic health is an approach to wellness that looks at the whole person for answers. We are each made up of a number of interrelated parts. If one part is out of balance and not working properly, all the other parts will be affected.
To achieve optimal health, the body, mind and spirit of an individual must all be taken into account. The physical, mental/emotional and spiritual aspects of life are considered as all being closely interconnected pieces of the whole and cannot be separated.
1. The Body/Physical Aspect
• Example: A muscle tear is causing pain and compensation in the body.
• Genes or genetic make-up and disposition may also be playing a role.
• Food and diet may be causing inflammation. “You are what you eat!”
2. The Mind/Mental Aspect
• There is a strong connection between the body and mind.
• Our mental attitudes, beliefs, emotions and values affect our health.
• Do we have a victim mindset or are we taking responsibility for our health
and our ability to heal?
3. The Soul/Spiritual Aspect
• We are more than just our bodies and minds. We are spiritual beings.
• This aspect addresses the essence of who we are, the core self, our energetic body.
• It is multifaceted with each person having their own unique experience; their connection to a Higher Power.
Holistic health also takes into account social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects, as well as the nutritional needs of each individual.
This approach to health and healing goes beyond just eliminating symptoms and seeks to find and address the root cause of any imbalances or dis-ease.
With each new day comes a variety of opportunities and challenges, and each of us responds differently to the many aspects of life. We all have the power, however, to choose certain things, such as our diet, behaviors and lifestyle. In order to maintain vitality, balance and overall health, it’s important to pay attention to our decisions and how they affect us.
Holistic health is more than just a “quick fix.” The body is highly intelligent and is always trying to tell us something. A symptom such as pain is a warning sign, a message that something is out of balance and needs our attention. If we just take a pill to alleviate the pain or symptom, then we are missing the bigger picture. Instead, we aim to get to the underlying cause of the issue, so that true healing can occur. We do this by supporting the body’s innate wisdom and its ability to self heal, as opposed to just masking or reducing symptoms.
Regular holistic care helps to bring life into balance and keep it that way. When people accept responsibility for their own well-being, and everyday choices are used to take charge of one’s own health, this creates balance and alignment in body, mind, emotions, purpose and passion, resulting in fulfilling holistic health from the inside out, with long lasting effects.
