Becoming more aware of the changing of the seasons and how they may affect you is a profound practice. By being present with the seasons you can support your Body, Mind and Soul in recognizing all the shifts that are happening within and around you.

The shift from fall to winter for many, means cooler weather, fewer daylight hours, changes in activities, in food and in mood.

Taking extra care by making a few simple lifestyle changes during this transitional time will help keep you balanced, so you can maintain a strong immune system, good mental health and overall holistic well-being.

Transitions can sometimes be hard on our bodies and our minds. Be gentle with yourself during this time, stay cozy and fuel yourself with good food. When you are ready, you can emerge revitalized, renewed and ready for great things in the spring.

Try not to “tough out” the cold weather.  Don’t wait for a certain date to put the heat on or to shift from shorts to pants. When the need arises, stay warm with blankets, a scarf and or beanie/hat to help regulate your body temperature.

To prevent dry skin and avoid winter colds and flus, be sure to stay hydrated by drinking half your weight in ounces of water. Try room temperature or warm water. As for foods, winter calls for warm, hearty, and healthy foods like soups, stews and curries.

Watch your Vitamin D levels. The lack of sunshine-filled days means you may not be getting enough. Vitamin D supports healthy moods, immune function, regulates blood sugar, weight, and proper absorption of calcium. When sunshine is lacking, look for extra foods that are high in Vitamin D such as salmon, tuna, cheese, whole milk, egg yolks and mushrooms of all kinds.

During the winter months, the natural rhythm of your body calls for a slowing down. Make sure to listen and follow the cues your body is sending. Winter invites a time to reflect and retreat. Create some quiet time to renew yourself and put focus on your goals and ideals. Make sure to make space for this and avoid staying so busy that you can’t focus inward.

What are two things you will incorporate this year to create a healthy transition from Fall to Winter?
